Alex police fatally shot a man who was randomly shooting at residents at the corner of Alfred Nzo Street and 1st Avenue.

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, police officers were driving in an unmarked police vehicle in the Beirut section of Alexandra near Madala Hostel when they heard gunshots.

The officers led by a Detective Sergeant Hlungwani and Detective Sergeant Xaba saw residents running away as shots rang out. They stopped their car to investigate and noticed an armed man fleeing the scene.

They gave chase and found the man at the corner of Watt and First Streets in Wynberg talking to another man. Hlungwani ordered the two men to put up their hands but the armed man opened fire on them.

Maphakela said the officers returned fire, killing the armed man and injuring the other in the leg. The wounded man was taken to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

The wounded man and three other suspects were arrested as accomplices to the shooter and will appear in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on charges of attempted murder, and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Maphakela said an inquest would be held in connection with the death of the armed suspect.
