Alex kids benefit from KFC millions

ALEXANDRA - Afrika Tikkun celebrated world food day by recognising the contribution of a major food chain ensuring food security of its beneficiaries.

Humanitarian non-profit organisation, Afrika Tikkun celebrated World Food Day on 16 October by recognising the contribution of a major food chain’s effort to provide food security.

The day is declared to raise public and corporates’ awareness of the 3.3 million children in the country who go to bed with empty stomachs daily.

The organisation commended Kentucky Fried Chicken’s (KFC) Add Hope initiative for supporting the organisation’s feeding programme. The programme provides hot meals and food parcels to about 550 children, 120 elderly citizens and 48 destitute families.

Lauren Turnbull of KFC said the meals gave the children hope for a better tomorrow. “Their full tummies help them learn, grow and thrive to be the future leaders that this country deserves,” she said.

Turnbull added that the food chain provided food to 70 000 children in the country. “The company aims to feed more children in the next five years to bring down the number of hungry children. This will include using other options for food security like farming projects.”

Thokozani Mhlanga of the organisation said many of its other centres grew vegetables to supplement the food parcels, but due to limited space in Alexandra this was not possible.

She said the food parcels comprised cooking oil, mealie meal, rice, sugar, soap and washing powder.
