ALEXANDRA - Shoot out suspects appear in court.

The men involved in the fatal shooting of a woman on Old Pretoria Road on 10 October during taxi violence appeared in Alexandra Magistrate Court.

On the morning of 13 October at 10.35am, the three suspects made a brief appearance in front of magistrate Renier Boshoff.

The three men were accused of murder and attempted murder. Their case was postponed until 20 October, where they are expected to make their bail application.

State prosecutor, Jimmy Shongwe, said the state would be opposing bail.

When asked if further arrests were going to be made, Shongwe said, definitely, “There are two other suspects mentioned by a witness, closely linked to the taxi associations involved, but I can’t reveal their identities as this would jeopardise the investigation.”

According to Shongwe, all three men are from the Alexandra Taxi Association (ATA).

On the morning of 10 October, they were in conflict with Ivory Park Taxi Association (IPA). “The witness said the shots came from the men from ATA,” he said. “They were trying to stop the IPA from offloading passengers from their taxis,” he continued.

Shongwe was unable to confirm or deny that the men handed themselves in to the police. “Some say they were laying a complaint, and were arrested during that process as they were unaware that the police knew of their involvement. Others say, they approached the police in order to hand themselves in.”

None of the deceased’s family members were seen in court. The men were jointly represented by their attorney Stephan van Rensburg, from BDK Attorneys who declined to comment on the case.
