JOBURG - Rhythm City actress Connie Chiume has come out in support of her striking Generations colleagues, saying the creative industry is long overdue for a complete overhaul.

Rhythm City actress Connie Chiume has come out in support of her striking Generations colleagues.

Addressing a group of women from Alexandra and Thembisa who were invited to celebrate a Women’s Day seminar organised by Women of Essence 360, also known as WE3sixty, in association with OpenView HD, Chiume said it was no wonder people always said actors die poor.

“I fully support the actors who have taken a conscious decision to go on strike to demand their rights, which includes a decent salary and working conditions,” she said. “We have problems in this industry and what they [Generations actors] are asking for is not impossible.

“This is why in this industry we are regarded as people who always die poor, and more often than not ordinary citizens have to fork out their hard earned money to bury some of us.”

Chiume said the creative industry was long overdue for a total overhaul. “We can no longer continue to pretend that everything is hunky-dory in this industry.

“We desperately need to transformation this industry and I am sure the viewers at home fully stand by us.”

Addressing the nyaope problem that is ravaging the youth in Alexandra and other areas, Chiume deplored the assertion that the youth was a lost generation. “If indeed they are a lost generation then this means that we as parents have failed them.

“We need to close ranks as the community and tackle this pandemic before it destroys our youth, who are the future leaders of our country. Without them we are doomed as a nation,” she added.
