ALEXANDRA - One suspect was killed and two injured in a cops and robbers shootout in the early hours of the morning following a distress call from occupants of a house that was being targeted.

One suspect was killed and two injured in a cops and robbers shootout in the early hours of the morning of 4 August.

This followed a distress call to police from occupants of a house that was being targeted.

No police officers were wounded in the shootout. Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the two wounded suspects were taken to hospital for treatment under police guard.

He said the police had reacted to a distress call at about 3am from occupants of a house on the corner of Vincent Tshabalala Road and 8th Avenue. When the police arrived on the scene, the alleged robbers opened fire on them. Maphakela said they recovered two firearms, a 7.65 and a 9mm pistol with their serial numbers filed off. Eight rounds of ammunition, three of which belonged to the 7.65 and five for the 9mm, were also recovered.

He said the suspects were aged between 20 and 30 years. Two of them were foreign nationals and the other a South African. Maphakela said the wounded suspects had not appeared in court as they were still being treated in hospital.

They would be charged for attempted robbery, attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
