People, companies and institutions with a passion for other human beings were out in full force in Alexandra, showing the very basic of humanity – love, humility and caring.

This was in honour of Nelson Mandela whose selflessness and devotion to the liberty of mankind and freedom of South Africans in particular earned him the title of global icon.

All of them in unison said they were committing beyond the 67 Mandela minutes to a full day of helping the less advantaged, and hoped that everyone, company and institutions would rather make every day a Mandela Day through deeds of compassion.

The Alexandra clinic hosted several partners in honouring the day. Labane Maluleke, chief executive officer, said the clinic hosted the event annually as a way of giving back to the community. This year they provided a platform for partners to express their giving spirit by cleaning the premises and also handed out soup.

Shakerah Shaik of Traffic Free Flow which places points men at road intersections to ease traffic congestion, said the company had partnered with the clinic to provide soup to patients and anyone else there.

“This is to help keep them warm in the winter weather and to add to their nutrition,” she said.

They had earlier distributed soup to patients at the Thoko Mngoma clinic in Marlboro.

Bennetts a children’s toiletry company said they choose to volunteer at the clinic in order to donate essential balms and aqueous creams to babies and also to gave out hot dogs to patients.

Daniel Mann of Kyocera CBS which trades in copiers and printers said it was necessary to give help where it was needed the most, and volunteered to clean a section at the hospital until the assigned job was finished.

Other organisations that volunteered for various tasks at the clinic were ICR Electric, Damelin College and the Alexandra Development Centre.
