Toilet talk on Mandela Day

ALEXANDRA - A DEVELOPMENT organisation, Building Blocks Foundation is hoping to mark Mandela day with a workshop on sanitation.

A development organisation, Building Blocks Foundation will mark Mandela Day with a workshop on sanitation for Alexandra residents.

Health and hygiene conditions in this sprawling settlement are deplorable and compromise the realisation of human rights for the residents.

Despite 20 years of democracy, many of the residents still use bucket toilets which are sometimes not emptied for days causing a pungent smell from the them.

The foundation, which was started by four youths has already constructed 11 replacement flush toilets through its own funds, and the community’s financial and labour contributions.

Candice Sehoma, a representative of the foundation said, “Mandela Day calls on everyone to do good to others and themselves and is the most appropriate moment to make the community realise that they can improve their own negative health condition through toilet construction,” she said.

The workshop will be on 19th July at Thusong Youth Centre starting at 9am and all residents of Alexandra are invited.
