ALEXANDRA - An Alex man was shot and wounded for allegedly failing to provide two men with cigarettes after they stopped and asked him for 'a smoke'.

Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said police had been called to Edenvale Hospital to attend to a case of attempted murder after a man with a gunshot wound on his back was brought in for treatment.

The 8th Avenue man said he was shot by two men who had stopped him and asked for a cigarette. He said they had stopped him in the street, and when he told them he did not smoke, one of them pulled out a gun and fired at him, hitting him in the back.

Maphakela, who said no arrests have been made and police were still investigating. He appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the incident and happens to know the suspects, to come forward with information.
