Pupils commit to studies during the holidays

ALEXANDRA - With schools closed for the second term holidays, Alex students have vowed not to have a break from their school work.

With schools closed for the second term holidays, some Alex students have vowed not to have a break from their school work.

They have stated that school would come first, after they received their matric results for the term.

Everything else is secondary, and having fun is only dependent on doing well at school, said a group of pupils from Eastbank High School. The five Grade 12 girls – Natasha Teffo (19), Monica Ndaba (20), Mpho Khunou (18), Ntathabiseng Mokwena (18) and Selinah Kgatsa (20) – said their goal was to improve their marks in readiness for the final third term examinations.

They said they would rest for a day or two but would be back to their books through home study, in the library, and through winter school. At Realogile High School another group echoed these sentiments. They would attend a leadership camp for the first week but would still study in the evening and attend holiday school thereafter. One of them, Rose Seima, would also attend filming sessions for a movie about teenagers and education, to be shot at the school. She was recruiting 30 schoolmates as extras for the movie.

Others, who this reporter found in the Realogile school computer lab, said they and their peers didn’t require encouragement or motivation anymore. They said they were well aware of the value of education having seen the suffering from joblessness by those already out of school, due to having either dropped out or failing. The Gauteng Department of Education is hoping for improved school results by sponsoring a learning programme during the holidays in poorly performing schools.
