Illegal guns and ammunition accused to apply for bail

ALEXANDRA - Police have detained a man for illegal possession of fire arms and ammunition after a tip off from a member of the public.

The man arrested at a 5th Avenue shack by Alexandra Police late last week for possession of illegal guns and ammunition appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the accused was remanded in custody for bail application on Thursday. Maphakela added that the guns and ammunition were sent for ballistic testing to determine if they were connected to any other crime(s) and that the accused’s background was also being investigated.

Police have detained an Alex man for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition after a tip-off from a member of the public.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said police went to a shack on 5th Avenue in Alexandra where, after obtaining permission from the suspect to search the premises, they found five firearms with the serial numbers filed off, five magazines and 111 live rounds of ammunition hidden in a cupboard.

Maphakela said the suspect failed to produce a firearms licence which led to his arrest. He will appear in court soon.
