Alex theatre groups urged to audition

ALEXANDRA - Ishashalazi Theatre talent identification campaign is calling on community theatre groups to audition for an opportunity to take their craft further.

Are you part of a theatre group consisting of not less than five and not more than 12 members with original productions? Then the Ishashalazi Theatre talent identification campaign is calling on you and your crew to audition for an opportunity to take your craft further.

The Ishashalazi Theatre programme is an endeavour by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation to discover, cultivate, showcase and reward community theatre.

It will run auditions for Alex groups on 20 July at a venue still to announced. Groups are invited to audition original productions that do not exceed 45 minutes.

Selected groups will form part of the Ishashalazi Festival which will be staged at the end of the year at various venues across the province.

Individuals and groups will undergo intensive workshop sessions with industry experts, receive an opportunity to showcase their work in theatres around the province through the festival, and be in line to win huge prize money at the annual Ishashalazi Theatre Awards.

Participating productions also stand a chance to be selected for an all-expenses paid trip to participate at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

Newly-appointed MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Molebatsi Bopape has hit the ground running and has endorsed the programme and called on the community theatre society to take advantage of this opportunity. She said her department was aware of the challenges faced by the industry and the scant opportunities for actors, directors and scriptwriters to break through and make a success of

their craft, hence the department encourages them to participate in this programme which is aimed at opening doors for community theatre.
