IEC: Significant moves expected as counting continues

Although more than fifty percent of the national votes have been counted and verified, the Independent Electoral Commission said no significant predictions could be made yet.

The ANC currently remained at the top of the results tables with 63 percent of votes, while the DA trailed with 22,65 percent and the Economic Freedom Fighters followed with 4,77 percent. “While a picture of trends is beginning to emerge it is still far too early to make any meaningful predictions of the final outcome,” IEC chairperson Pansy Tlakula said.

According to Tlakula, although votes from more than half of all voting districts had been captured, the majority of these were smaller voting districts and municipalities in terms of voter numbers.

She noted that Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal – two of the provinces with the largest voter numbers – had the lowest percentages of votes counted thus far.

Only 20 percent of votes in Gauteng and 44 percent of votes in KwaZulu-Natal had been counted.

As a result, she said the IEC still anticipated significant moves in the results tables as counting continued.

The IEC was pleased with how counting was progressing.
