Alex community pleads for urgent interventions to save Jukskei River

Alexandra Water and Sanitation secretary general Thabo Mopasi warns that the Jukskei River's deteriorating condition threatens Alexandra residents' health and safety and calls for immediate local government interventions.

Alexandra Water and Sanitation secretary general Thabo Mopasi called on the Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs) of the City of Johannesburg to take decisive action and preserve the Jukskei River.

Mopasi has raised alarming concerns regarding the condition of this essential waterway. With three tributaries, known as dongas flowing into the river, these waterways’ systemic pollution and neglect pose a significant threat to the community’s health, safety, and spiritual well-being.

“For years, we have witnessed the degradation of our precious waterways. People continue to use these dongas as dumping grounds and sewage channels, endangering the livelihoods and lives of our residents,” he said.

Mopasi said the tributaries leading into the Jukskei River have become repositories for waste, with untreated sewage, rubbish, and even dead animals finding their way into the flowing water.
Mopasi emphasised the grave danger this presented, particularly with the onset of the rainy season.

“Our community faces the imminent risk of flooding and environmental disaster. The sludge that has accumulated in the river is not only a physical hazard but it also poses severe health risks. As it mixes with rubbish, it becomes compounded with poisonous materials that are unsuitable for any form of recycling.

“People are narrowing the river through illegal dumping, cramping the space in which the water can flow. If left unchecked, a significant flood event could sweep away lives and properties in mere moments.”

Beyond health risks, the Jukskei River holds deep spiritual significance for many in the community. “This river is viewed as a source of power and spirituality. It has connections to the underworld and often rises without warning.

“As such, our community must treat it with respect and care. We must restore the river to a state where it can again be a source of life, rather than a danger. We cannot afford to wait for a disaster to happen before we act.”

He added city authorities and community members must come together to protect the environment and lives. “It is time for change, for action, and for a renewed commitment to saving the Jukskei River. Together, we can restore the health and spirit of our community.”

Mopasi advocated for immediate vaccination for individuals willing to participate in clean-up efforts, ensuring their protection from the diseases lurking in the contaminated waters.
