Local runners club strides toward optimal performance

Run Alex Athletics Club takes a healthy leap forward as their Wellness Day event unlocks improved health and performance insights for runners.

More than 20 runners were treated to holistic wellness and performance improvement at the Run Alex Athletics Club’s first Wellness Day held at Altrek Hall on July 6.

In partnership with the Mkhwane SS Biokineticist, the event was designed to empower runners to care for themselves and improve their running pace, particularly after some members suffered injuries during the Comrades Marathon.

The club’s head of events Summer Shongwe says they have plans to establish a long-term relationship with Mkhwane SS Bio Kinetics.

The day began with a health and fitness evaluation where participants had the chance to assess their current health status, fitness levels, and any pre-existing injuries. This was followed by a movement screening session, where experts evaluated gait, posture, and running mechanics to identify any imbalances or areas for improvement.

The club’s head of events Summer Shongwe said, “The experts provided valuable guidance on how runners could improve in these areas and explained how such improvements would benefit running quality. The health and fitness evaluations highlighted the need for runners to improve particularly in posture, hydration, and body fat management.

She added they were thrilled with the response to the Wellness Day event.
“It was wonderful to see everyone engaged and eager to be evaluated by professionals and to see such a high level of involvement despite many people typically working on weekends.

“We hope that this event will inspire our runners to prioritise their health and fitness, leading to improved performance and reduced injuries. The club is planning to continue this initiative by establishing a long-term relationship with Mkhwane SS Biokinetics.”
