A top-of-the-table clash is up next for Stars

A clash of the top two teams of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association Promotional League is on the cards for Alex football lovers.

United Stars continues to make its intentions quite clear for all and sundry to know that they are destined for the championship of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association Promotional League.

This was amplified in the side’s weekend [February 17] emphatic 9-2 win against the 11th-placed team in the log, Joburg Rovers Academy side in a match played at the Totalsports Alex SafeHub ground, which used to be known as Ground Number 1 behind Alexandra High School.

The goal scorers were Itumeleng ‘Lebese’ Morake (1 goal), Junior Mothapo (1), Thabiso ‘Matata’ Mangoaela (1), Liyanda ‘Lesedi’ Jaca (2) and Njabulo Shabalala (4), who is also the leading goal scorer of the league with 13 goals to his credit so far and his nearest rival with nine from Arsenal City.

This was the second such big score win for the River Park-based outfit, with the first registered earlier in the league against Alex Arsenal City FC with another unprecedented win of 8-0, both of which have become record scorelines of the league.

Next on the slaughter trail is none other than their rivals in the title chase, the second-placed LRC FC, which has faltered twice already. Two weekends back [February 10], LRC was held to a goalless draw by then-fourth-placed Amaskills FC.

While title chasing LRC was held to a goalless draw that weekend, Stars had three points delivered to the side on a silver platter following a walkover due to the non-arrival of opponents, the struggling Stamina Football Academy to honour the fixture.

This weekend [February 17], LRC lost 2-1 to Alex Arsenal City, paving an eight-point lead for the Stars at the summit of the ANLFA Promotional League and a feat that team president Sakhile Zulu holds dearly for his boys.

United Stars just before kick-off in one of its matches at the Totalsports Alex SafeHub.

“To me, it’s a sign that the boys are maturing at every game, and this is encouraging as it makes me feel they are, for sure, ready for the big-league challenge if we win this promotional championship,” Zulu told Alex News.

Zulu warned his boys not to be complacent and think the league is in the bag. “The league is a marathon and it’s far from over until it’s over. We now need to concentrate even more and ensure there is no slip-up.

“LRC is a team we cannot underrate as we know what they are capable of,” said Zulu, whose boys are the only unbeaten side of the league in 11 matches, having only drawn two.
