Soweto derby beamed live in Africa

JOBURG - The Soweto derby between Pirates and Chiefs was watched live by more than 50 countries across Africa.

More than 50 countries across sub-Saharan Africa witnessed the Absa Premiership Soweto derby between arch-rivals Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs – courtesy of SuperSport’s reach across the continent.

“The success of many leagues throughout the world depends, among other things, on the quality of the broadcast product. Our partnership with SuperSport has made us a cut above the rest when it comes to broadcast quality and how our product is packaged and presented,” said Premier Soccer League CEO Brand de Villiers.

“This derby was yet another opportunity for the league and SuperSport to showcase our product on a global stage.” The World of Champions buildup started on 13 March with an exclusive 30-minute preview on PSL Specials.

It was immediately followed by Thursday Night Live where sport presenter Robert Marawa sat down with former allies-turned-rivals, the recently appointed Pirates coach Vladimir Vermezovic and Chiefs’ assistant Doctor Khumalo.

Legends Jimmy Tau, Mark Fish and Mark Williams were in the technical area with Marawa for an hour-and-a-half discussion during the live broadcast. Khumalo, also a legend, was on the bench for Chiefs assisting coach Stuart Baxter with touchline instructions.
