Joburg Speaker calls for tolerance in Palestinian-Israeli war

City of Johannesburg Speaker Cllr Colleen Makhubela says something needs to be done and done urgently to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the Middle East.

The Speaker for the City of Johannesburg Cllr Colleen Makhuibela has called for tolerance in the ongoing conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians in Gaza.

At the end of her keynote address at the We Love Alexandra Community Makeover Project meeting at the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) offices in Sandton on October 12, Makhubelasaid it was disheartening to witness the killings on both sides.

“This war between the Israelis and the Palestinians directly affects us as we have large communities of both the Jewish and Palestinian people in our city. As I speak, our city is torn apart by the latest fighting and it’s not good; not just for our city but the entire country,” Makhubela said.

She called for tolerance among the warring parties and hoped that a speedy resolution to what constantly triggered the fighting could be found. “We send our condolences to the families of all those who have perished from the latest flare-up of the fighting and call for tolerance from both sides of the divide,” she said.

Makhubela said it was disheartening to see the amount of destruction and an increase in the number of children killed and maimed in the conflict that they have no bearing and control over and said this cannot be allowed to continue.

She appealed to the South African government and the international community to broker a ceasefire and remedy whatever caused the constant flare-up of the fighting. “We cannot continue to live like this, as human beings, and something needs to be done and done urgently,” she said.
