Investment in the development of junior road runners made by the Run Alex Athletics Club is now paying dividends.
The success of the Run Alex Athletics Club’s development of junior runners in the township is there for all to see and savour following the youngsters’ dominance of the recent Fat Cats Race at the Mall of Africa.
On the morning of October 8, more than 2 000 runners gathered at the Mall of Africa for the Fat Cats 10km Race. Among the thousands were 80 Run Alex Athletics Club members, of which 25 were juniors under the age of 18, who participated in the 5km part of the race.
The Run Alex juniors dominated the female 5km race with 10-year-old Thandolwenkosi Ndlovu being the first female to cross the finish line with a time of 26:04.
She was followed by Thandeka Sibanda in second place with a time of 27:50 while Nomfundo Shelembe completed the Run Alex podium clean sweep when she came in third in a time of 28:36.
In a bid not to be outdone by his young ones, Run Alex juniors’ head coach Ronny Ndhlovu also summited the podium when he finished first in the 60-year-old category of the 10km race, with a time of 45:24.
Speaking on this achievement, Run Alex’s juniors’ administrator Anelisa Mzimazi said; “To see women and girls, of all ages, led by a 10-year-old girl from start to finish was amazing. This speaks to the selfless work the coaches are putting in week in and week out, working with these talented bunch of youngsters.”
