Ivory Park gives Sandown a fright of its life
The quarterfinal matches of the Sibusiso Cosmos Zwane Schools Tournament in both football and netball will be played on September 20 and 21.
Ivory Park High School boys put up a brave fight in the second half that gave Sandown High School a fright in their narrow 1-0 lead.
The rejuvenated Ivory Park bombarded the Sandown goalmouth on numerous occasions in search of an equaliser that was not to be and allowed the Sandton-based school to add another goal in the dying minutes of the game to walk away as 2-0 victors.
This was in the last 16 rounds of matches of the annual Sibusiso Cosmos Zwane Schools Tournament played at the Number 3 Square Grounds on September 13. As a result, Sandown advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Sandown was in a panic as they could sense and see a possibility of letting its narrow lead slip away but the lack of clinical finishing by Ivory Park forwards allowed the Sandown side to gain its confidence and went out in search of a cushion goal.
The first goal came via a penalty kick following a foul inside the box and the referee never hesitated in pointing to the penalty spot and one of the Sandown’s lanky strikers opted to take it and never disappointed.
Sandown joins Barnato Park High School in the quarterfinals, along with KwaBhekilanga High School, Minerva High School, East Bank High School, Sandtonview High School, Alex High School and Northview High School.
In the netball section, Ivory Park is through to the quarterfinals along with Curo Midrand High School, Wendywood High School, Minerva High School, Realogile High School, Sandtonview High School, KwaBhekilanga High School and Waverley Girls High School.
Both football and netball quarterfinals are on September 20 and 21 at the same venue.
