Joburg Choral Music Festival set to thrill audiences this Sunday

The concert is expected to end on a high note with soloists coming together to perform as a quartet and ending with the national anthem.

The Annual Joburg Choral Festival is back for a 6th edition and it will be hosted at the Joburg Theatre (Mandela Theatre) on May 21, between 10:00 and 16:00.

The event will be recorded and streamed for audiences who are not able to attend and will feature some of the most exciting choral voices in the country, and it promises a scintillating experience of choral and classical music.

The festival prides itself in the promotion and preservation of this beautiful art form and ensuring that choral music lovers continue to feast on its delectable sounds and is an initiative of the City of Joburg’s Arts, Culture and Heritage Department which is aimed at stimulating broader interest, participation, and support for this unique musical genre.

Since its inception in 2017, this festival has annually featured more than 600 singers from diverse backgrounds, who gather annually to thrill Joburg audiences with the very best choral music performances.

“We are excited as a city to play an important role in supporting this marginalised genre of music to ensure that it doesn’t die. As a leading city for creative platforms in the country, we are proud to bring this phenomenal festival to residents,” said Cllr Lubabalo Magwentsu, MMC for Community Development.

The festival provides an opportunity for diverse singers to share their musical experience and delight the audience with innovative versions of some of South Africa’s much-loved cultural songs.

Choral music revellers are in for a treat this year. Each choir and soloists will perform two items. One prescribed song, accompanied by an orchestra and a song of their choice showcases the wealth of traditional South African compositions.

Leading soloists such as Delisile Mahlangu, Timothy Sehau, Thulisile Mndzebele and Nkosingiphile Lubisi will participate in the event. World-renowned soprano artist, Khayakazi Madlala is the guest soloist for this year’s event.

“May is historic for the continent of Africa because of the significance of Africa Day in which many cities across the length and breadth of the continent will showcase the wealth of our cultural, political and social heritage. The city will make its contribution through the festival,” said Vuyisile Mshudulu, Director of Arts, Culture and Heritage.

This year, for the first time in history, the festival will feature choirs from outside the city – one from KwaZulu Natal and another from the Eastern Cape.
