City Power warns of bogus debt collectors that are on the prowl

While urging defaulting customers to settle their debts, City Power has urged its customers and residents not to make any payments to anyone or any company before verifying it with the entity.

City Power has issued a warning to its City of Johannesburg residents and customers to be vigilant against criminals who are posing as the entity’s debt collectors.

“We have been warned of a disturbing trend from scammers who are attempting to take advantage of our revenue collection efforts across the city by posing as debt collectors from the entity and hoping to defraud our unsuspecting customers,” said spokesperson Isaac Mangena.

“Several of our customers have reportedly received threatening emails from a fraudulent debt collection company called Hlaketa Revenue Enhancement Systems. Customers are urged not to make any payment or payments to this or any other company without first verifying with City Power.”

Mangena said the entity was pleased that customers who received messages of threats of disconnection did not panic but instead reported the alleged fraudsters to the entity before actually making any payments.

The matter has been reported to the police and Mangena said City Power will only effect disconnections with the purpose of recovering growing debt after following due process, which includes repeated calls and messages urging customers to pay.

“When our officials come to disconnect, customers can identify them through their trademark uniforms and ID cards, which they’re required to wear when they’re on duty.

“Customers can also verify the credentials of City Power employees by contacting the number which appears on the identification card and can also call the toll-free number 0800 116 166 or send a WhatsApp message to 083 579 4497.”

Non-paying and defaulting customers are urged to settle their accounts directly with City Power.
