Alex High girl learners urged to always remember books before boys

Busamed Modderfontein Private Hospital visited Alexandra High School in commemoration of STI/Condom Week.

Dr Tsuari, a gynecologist fertility specialist, and marketing manager Asiphe Hlela went all out to educate the learners and raise awareness around this important week.
Dr Tsuari explained the difference between condoms and femidom and the importance of always carrying them to protect themselves from infections– not only HIV but also STIs.
She took the learners through different types of STIs and how they can be picked up if they have one. Dr Tsuari also encouraged the kids on the importance of having an open relationship with their parents.

She advised that having an open relationship allows them to speak freely and openly with them and they would have a person that will always encourage them to protect themselves. The different types of STIs that were explained were gonorrhea, chlamydia trachomatis, syphilis, etc. Dr Tsuari took them through the stages of these infections and how some of them do not have symptoms.

She encouraged them to stay safe and focus on school and also took them through different types of contraceptives but emphasized the importance of still using a condom as she advised that contraceptives are not 100% guaranteed and they do not protect them from infections, hence, it is important to always use a condom.
She also explained that contraceptives are not encouraged for teenagers as they mostly recommend them for women with children. Dr Tsuari also explained the effect of antibiotics when on contraceptives. The scholars were very interactive and open about how difficult it is to have an open relationship with their parents, and this limits them from being more informed and comfortable around them.

The big message left for the girl learners was to always remember the 6Bs, those being –; Books Before Boys Because Boys Make Babies.
