The nominations in the 20 categories opened on August 18 and will close on September 16 which will be followed by an adjudication process and announcement of the nominees in October. MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Mbali Hlophe has urged local sporting bodies to take part in the nominations.

Hlophe said grassroots sporting bodies were also encouraged to nominate their sportsmen and women and must not think the awards were just for professionals. “We want people in the grassroots sports to also go out of their way to nominate their outstanding sports people so we can also celebrate them in the various categories,” Hlophe told a media briefing.

Hlophe said the awards were making a return to the spotlight after the two-year Covid-19 hiatus. “I am sure most of the sports bodies in Gauteng are delighted by the return of the awards and are raring to go and make those nominations for the glamourous awards.”

Banyana Banyana, who are the reigning African champions after lifting the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2022 in Morocco in July, is expected to dominate the awards this year which Hlophe said would be held in late November or early December.

Nomination entries can be dropped at the offices of the Gauteng Sports Confederation at the Johannesburg Stadium.
