Students Alex high schools attend career exhibition

Children in Alex were guided through different career choices at the youth exhibition on August 12.

Gauteng provincial legislature organised a career exhibition at Alexandra Stadium for high school learners from all the schools in Alex on August 12.

Chairperson of committees from Gauteng provincial legislature Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane said, “For the first time in Alex we had a youth exhibition and it was a success, as many organisations honoured the invites and came to exhibit for the learners.

“We have brought all the institutions of higher learning for the learners who are interested to go to university and TVET colleges after matric. The government departments and the private sectors also joined us to interact with the children about the career opportunities that are available. Taxi associations were also available to guide children on how to become successful taxi owners, and mining organisations indicated mining opportunities for the learners.”

Nkosi-Malobane said they also invited the police to warn children about the dangers of crime, while the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence warned them about the dangers of drugs.

She also said they are planning a more intimate youth indaba in Alex in September where young people will interact with government and private sectors. “We have also requested universities, including the University of Technology and TVET colleges, to come to the youth indaba … and register the learners who have passed their matric and would love to go to tertiary.”

She hoped that this would halve the number of learners in queues during January and February registration periods as well as reduce learners being scammed. “We hope by doing this, we are cutting the number of societal problems faced in Alexandra [in half],” Nkosi-Malobane concluded.
