Champions League football comes to Alex

Alex youngsters and their Braamfontein, Diepsloot and Orange Farm counterparts will participate in an Afrika Tikkun-sponsored Champions League football tournament.

The U13 and U15 teams of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association (LFA) will have a taste of what it takes to play Champions League football.

This follows a decision of the public benefit organisation Afrika Tikkun to sponsor a soccer tournament in each of the four areas in Johannesburg where it has a footprint – Alex, Braamfontein, Diepsloot and Orange Farm.
This will form part of the organisation’s holistic development of both the boy and girl child to become better citizens and later, parents.

Sixteen teams from each of the two age divisions have already qualified for the tournament after the preliminary rounds and will battle it out for the championship in their age groups every month end of the coming two months to produce a champion.

As the teams battle it out, the Alex Northrand LFA will deploy scouts whose sole purpose will be to keep an eye out for talented players to be selected for a squad in each of the age groups that will be assembled to battle their selected counterparts from Braamfontein, Diepsloot and Orange Farm.

Alex Northrand LFA secretary general Malvin Khumalo, who is also the Afrika Tikkun programme coordinator of the Youth Accelerator Programme, said all the teams that have qualified have already been kitted out and the winners of each age division will receive a trophy, medals and kits. The trophy and kits will belong to the LFA for future use.
