Red Bull Kasi Cup returns to Alexandra to thrill football lovers with more kasi flavour

Red Bull Kasi Cup 2022 will be back in Alexandra for the third time and twice in a row to thrill football lovers with the kasi flavour of football and shibobos on August 27.

Alexandra Stadium will be abuzz on August 27 as it plays host to the third Red Bull Kasi Cup tournament that will see four kasi teams go head-to-head for the 2022 title.

And organisers are calling on football lovers to fill up the iconic stadium on the day.

To bring more action to the field, this year’s tournament will see a Red Bull Twist added to the mix. The Red Bull Kasi Cup has partnered with four local legends and gives an opportunity to budding and gifted football players to showcase their talent and validate their dreams of becoming the next big star of South African football.

The tournament also plays an important role in the grassroots development of the sport in South Africa, especially in areas with a pool of talent but minimal opportunities and facilities to nurture the potential that is there. Since the first tournament in 2019, the Kasi Cup has supported and impacted more than 3 000 individuals across Gauteng.

The four teams that will be taking part in this year’s tournament are Bhekilanga FC, Chego 17, Basil FC, and Munsieville Magical Galacticos FC. The competing teams have played and won in four major existing kasi football tournaments in and around Gauteng. The teams were founded by soccer legends Tebogo Mokoena, Malombo Lichaba, Steve Sekano, and Joseph Makhanya respectively. These legends understand the importance of grooming talent from a young age and giving opportunities to players to showcase their skills.

In addition to its unique format of having only three matches – two semi-finals and a final – this year’s tournament also features a Red Bull Twist. If a player suffers a shibobo by another player, they will have to sit on the bench for five minutes which will surely make the players bring their A-game on the day.

Commenting on the importance of the Red Bull Kasi Cup, former Bafana Bafana star Simphiwe Tshabalala, who also cut his teeth in the game in Alexandra for the now defunct Alex United said, “Having played in kasi football, I know the key role that it plays in developing you as an individual and as a player.

“Kasi football helps build resilience and teaches you how to believe in yourself and your talent, and this is what we want to see on the soccer field. I really commend Red Bull for putting together such a great initiative for up-and-coming talent, because it’s not just about the game, but the values.”

Fans are welcome to come and watch the Kasi Cup games on August 27 at the iconic Alexandra Stadium from 09:00 onwards.
