A library with love from Cape Town to an Alex school
Children from a disadvantaged primary school in Alex are now equipt for luxury learning.
Emfundisweni Primary School learners in Alexandra will no longer have to leave their school grounds and walk deep into the township to access library services like before.
This is thanks to The Bookery, Monocle and Breadline who launched a new library for the children from the formerly disadvantaged backgrounds who now have direct access to a new library on their school grounds.
Chairperson of the School Governing Board of the school Mthandeni Mothabe said the library will be fully operational from Monday to Friday for grades 4 to 6, and the school will employ a facilitator that will teach the children on how to use the library. “This is something good for the children because we want the children to learn and be equipped with more knowledge,” she added.
“We identify schools that do not have libraries and who need them, and we then partner with them to build well-stocked libraries for their learners. We then seek funding to help cover the costs of setting up the libraries as we did from Monocle,” said library coordinator at the Bookery Nobesuthu Faku.
“We then stock the libraries with a range of fiction, non-fiction, and reference books with help from professional librarians and we employ trained library assistants to care for and grow the libraries.”
Faku added they will be sponsoring the school for three years, and the school will have to employ a library assistant that will be paid for by the Bookey and Monocle.
The funders were awarded certificates of appreciation by the school principal Thembakazi Giyama, who also thanked the sponsors and promised that the library will be put to good use for the benefit of the children.
