Special Olympics celebrates Mandela Day

Learners from various schools in Alex, got a chance to learn basketball and play with celebrities.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Special Olympics held a basketball youth clinic for basketball at the 3-Square Sports Complex where 90 children from Alex participated as part of Mandela Day celebrations on July 22.

Mthoko Madonda, a grassroots operator at NBA said, “A youth clinic is a skills development clinic where we introduce young people to the game of basketball and teach them life skills.

“There’s a lot of talent in Alex that we wanna tap into and we would love to see a lot of young people play at an international level here in Alex.”

After their clinic, the children were entertained by a game of basketball played by celebrities. Featured in the match were actor Gabriel Temudzani, TV personality Nomuzi Mabena, actor and sports analyst Sbusiso Shongwe, author Jackie Phamotse, and actors Kabomo Vilakazi and Sydney Ramakuwela.

After the game, Shongwe said, “The most important part of the day was that the children managed to learn something and also be part of something.

“My advice [to the youth] is find anything you’re passionate about, and try to find support, there’s always someone willing to lend a hand.”
