Alex rugby players selected for Germiston games

Eight rugby players from Alexandra playing in the Alex Wolves Rugby Club have been selected to join a squad composed of other players from the Johannesburg East District for provincial games in Germiston on June 25.

Three boys and five girls from Alexandra have been selected to join other learners from the Johannesburg East District schools to form a rugby squad that will play in the provincial games at the Herman Immelman Athletics Stadium in Germiston on June 25.

A Gauteng provincial squad will be selected from the Germiston games for inter-provincial games to be played on a date and host city still to be decided.

Alexandra Wolves Rugby Club coach Jack Moloi said the five girls were selected during a programme known as ‘Girls into Rugby’ that was run in the township primary schools late last year just before the girls moved to high school early this year.

Moloi, along with his Alexandra Wolves U16 boys’ and girls’ coach Khula Msuthwana, wished the players all the best in the games and urged them to represent both Alex and Wolves well.

“We want them to go there and enjoy themselves at the games but keep the reputation of the township and Wolves at the back of their minds and not disappoint us,” Msuthwana said, adding that their selection speaks to the good work they do in training.

The selected boys are Karabo Monyela (15) from East Bank High School; Ntsako Sithole (15) and Pule Mtetwa (14), both from Realogile High School; the girls are Leakalala Phooko (14), Boitshepo Raphela (14) and Alice Moakamedi (14) all from KwaBhekilanga Secondary School; Penelope Mdunge (15) and Hlamalane Mofokeng (14), both from Pholosho Junior Secondary School.
