Dudula leader gets free bail

Dudula accuses the police of trumping up charges against their leader as an attempt at weakening the movement and its activities of ‘sweeping away’ all illegal foreigners trading at the Pan Africa Square.

The leader of the Alexandra Dudula Movement picked up by the police on May 12 on allegations of public violence after allegedly evading arrest has been granted free bail.

Simon ‘Msyza’ Rati, who also goes by the surname Tsatsi as given by him to Alex News, was granted free bail by the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court following his arrest for public violence in which Alexandra Police Station Commander Brigadier Lindiwe Magudulela described the complainant as the State.

According to Magudulela, Rati had been wanted on charges of violent acts during the movement’s recent protest action. She said when the Dudula 6 was arrested, following the recent violent clashes between Dudula members and foreign immigrants, police were short of one person to add to the Dudula 6 list and that person was Rati.

Contacted for comment following the free bail given to Rati, Agnes Malatjie, the public relations officer of the movement and the secretary of #OperationFiyela said this was done because the State has no case against him.

“If they had a case, not even a strong case for that matter, he would not have walked out without paying bail. The fact that he walked out on free bail shows they have no case against him.

“We as a movement view this as nothing but intimidation tactics from the Alexandra SAPS and somebody somewhere will have to answer as to why he was arrested in the first place.

“I believe there are people instigating all this and we need answers as to who ordered his arrest. I get the feeling the authorities thought if they picked him up as the kingpin of the movement, all Dudula activities would grind to a halt.

“I am here and other leaders are here as well and we will soldier on and continue to fiyela [sweep] Alexandra,” Malatjie told Alex News.
