Ward councillors encourage people to vote

The IEC will hold its second and final voting registration weekend on 8 and 9 February.

Voters can register between 8am and 5pm.

Residents only need to bring their green bar-coded ID book with them, as proof of residence is not needed.

According to Ward 90 councillor Gordon Mckay, the President Jacob Zuma will announce the election date soon after the registration weekend and anyone who has not registered by 9 February will not be able to vote in the 2014 general election.

“The elections will take place any time from 16 April to 7 May 2014,” said Mckay.

Having entered politics and become a councillor at a young age, Mckay encouraged all those 24 years and younger to register.

“The 2014 election will be the most important since 1994,” he said. “As at present no single party enjoys an outright majority in Gauteng. This means that this is anyone’s election. Voters are therefore strongly encouraged to participate in what will be a very lively election.”

Ward 87 councillor Amanda Forsythe said voting gave an opportunity to every South African to exercise their democratic right to choose a government that best represents their beliefs and values.

“No one should ever believe that their vote won’t make a difference, because every single one does,” she emphasised.

“Imagine what would happen if everyone thought that way? Make sure you’re registered and please express yourself through your vote.”
