Easter comes early for Alex kids

ALEX – A way to a kid's heart is through their tummy.

Vicky Sibuyane, the owner of Vicky’s Charity NPO, regularly distributes vegetable parcels to 50 children in Alex.

She started her project about eight years ago in Orange Grove when she used to dish out the previous day’s leftovers from her restaurant in Norwood every morning to displaced people, and if there were no leftovers she’d buy them bread.

In 2020, due to Covid-19 when a lot of businesses were closing down, her restaurant also closed down, and she moved to Alexandra where she started her charity project. Anthony Sacks of the Noah Can Foundation whom she met in Norwood offered to help.

“I lost my three sons here in Alex so I believe since I can’t give them my love anymore, let me give it to the kids in Alex. I saw how people are suffering here, and since I can, I want to help. It breaks my heart to see a kid going to school without eating anything because the parents are not working,” said Sibuyane.

A lot of people are seeing what Sibuyane is doing for her community and they also lend a helping hand. In December 2021, ballet company Mzansi Ballet donated 100 gifts and toys to Vicky’s Charity and Sibuyane distributed them to a 100 children.

“My plea is for Alex people, more especially youngsters, to lend a hand.”

Parent Johannah Mothiba said, “I am happy about all this because Vicky wants to see the kids happy and healthy. Most parents here are not working because of Covid-19 and the scarcity of jobs.”
