Sticky issues lead to postponement of Alex LFA elections

ALEXANDRA – Alex Northrand LFA may not vote in the regional and provincial elections if it has not concluded its own.

Tempers flared as yet another postponement of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association’s (LFA) quadrennial elections was announced due to numerous unresolved matters around the nomination process.

The secretary-general of the LFA Malvin Khumalo, who was chairing the elective AGM, was at pains to control differing members who wanted matters around the nomination process resolved. One of the issues was the matter of jurisdiction which relates to members living outside of the LFA area.

In a bid to calm tempers down, the chairperson of the Local Election Committee (LEC) Nkani Dube cited the case of Alex football legend and Map Games founder Maimane Phiri, who was born and grew up in Alex but now lived in Noordwyk, saying he would be barred from standing due to the fact that he lived in another LFA area.

The constitution of the LFA stipulated that office bearers must reside within the jurisdiction of the LFA they were standing for election, he said, adding that in the case of Maimane, the constitution would not allow him to stand in Alexandra but he could for the Midrand LFA.

Dube said the other sticky matter involved the verification and vetting of nominees as members of good standing, not just about having your membership paid to update, but also around criminal aspects of that particular individual.

“Issues such as these verifications and vetting process take time, as we still have to ask for consent through a form from the affected party or parties in order to check all those matters. You cannot just dig into somebody’s past without obtaining consent from him,” Dube said.

Even the new provisional date of the elections, March 27, could be subjected to postponement yet again as the committee would not have done all the necessary verifications and vetting processes before then, Dube warned.

The LEC’s legal officer Mfundo Tukane told members that continuous postponements of the elections would be detrimental to the LFA as they may not be ready to take part in the regional and provincial elections in accordance with the timelines issued by the mother body, the South African Football Association.

The meeting then resolved to cross the bridge of the elections when March 27 arrived in the hope that the outstanding matters would have been resolved.
