Alex Northrand LFA poll date may be moved

ALEXANDRA -– The election date hinges on the completion of the entire process within the 14 days, says Khumalo.

Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association (LFA) may not go to the polls on February 27 as earlier scheduled due to delays in the process.

Alex Northrand LFA secretary-general Malvin Khumalo hinted that this may happen during an interview with Alex News. He said the mother body, the South African Football Association (Safa) had indicated they would forward a drop-off point for the nomination forms which have been handed over to the clubs as opposed to giving them directly to the LFA as was the practice before.

This, Khumalo said, may interfere with the timelines of the process as nominations had already been given to clubs and were supposed to be completed two weeks prior to the election date and if this process overlapped the 14 days, it meant the date of the polls would have to be moved forward to accommodate the 14 days prescribed in the constitution of the LFA.

He said the 14 days allowed for the auditors to check and verify that all candidates who were standing for election were in good standing with the LFA, and this related to their membership status. “This is the most critical part of the entire election process and it has to be allowed to carefully run its course and cannot be tampered with, hence the possibility that the poll date might be moved slightly forward if this process has not run its course on time,” he said.

He conceded that the process was already behind schedule but added that clubs had been handed the nomination forms in good time. Khumalo said Safa then stepped in to control the process around the drop-off of the nomination forms as the mother body did not want a situation where the LFA could possibly interfere. He said Safa had indicated they would issue the auditor’s drop-off point by February 22.

Khumalo said if the date was moved slightly from February 27 to early March, this would still be within the time frames of the mother body’s guidelines that all LFAs must complete their electoral process by no later than April. This is to allow regions and provincial structures to also conduct their elections before Safa elections later in the year.
