UJW warms to its new offices

JOBURG – The union extended its gratitude to its donors, staff and volunteers who make these special projects happen.

The Union of Jewish Women (UJW) in Johannesburg held the official opening ceremony for their new home on January 30.

The ceremony included a celebration of the union’s 90th birthday party this year which was attended by various guests, including the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Dr Mpho Phalatse.

The mayor captivated the guests with her history and honesty about the challenges that lie ahead while Rebbetzin Gina Goldstein did the honours of officially opening the new home of the union.

In Goldstein’s words, “May the UJW continue to show us the power that Jewish women have to positively impact our communities and society.”

Chairperson of the Johannesburg branch of the union, Ingrid Koor, said all the women involved in the activities of the union, past and present, are an ‘inspiration to us all today and we stand on their shoulders, including our very special Shirley Ancer who has been a committed, active member for 50 years’.

The union’s flagship projects currently include Kosher Mobile Meals, the Sewing Empowerment School, the Alexandra Aftercare and Feeding Scheme, and the Soup Kitchen at the Hillbrow Community Health Centre and, of course, Bags for New beginnings.

Weltman also extended the union’s gratitude to all of its ‘wonderful donors, staff and volunteers who make these special projects happen’.
