A name changer

ALEXANDRA - One of Alexandra's oldest teams will change its name from Moroka Lions Football Club to Alex Lions.

A change of management following the withdrawal of most of its directors has forced current chairman Tsietsi ‘Tsivo’ Letsoela to change the name of the club which has a history dating back to 1918 when it was formed by the Mophosho family.

Tsivo has been running the club singled-handedly for the past two years. The club has teams from U10 up to U20.

“I tried in vain to get new directors, including asking parents of the various players to come onboard but none of them would,” he said. “I think many of our people do not easily want to associate with a venture that is not paying, so that could be the reason why they were not keen to join me and help take the club to the next level, considering its long-standing history.”

Tsivo said he planned to take the team to greater heights and did not want people to lay claim to having made the club what it is today. “This is why I am changing the name of the club as it is still held by the Mophosho family. That’s why I am divorcing the name Moroka Lions to go my own way,” Tsivo said.

Tsivo has since recruited people to help him run the club and has applied to the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association for the name change. Jabulani Selepe has joined the club as CEO, David Moowa as secretary and Phillip Nthala as manager. Warren Meyer has been appointed as treasurer, Brian Hlongwane will be the marketing director, Patricia Mthinkhulu the kit manager and Italy Ndlovu will head the club’s governing body.
