Origins of Alex house fire remains a mystery

ALEXANDRA – My only hope now lies in some Good Samaritans to spring to my rescue, says pensioner Olga Mabusela.

The origins of a midnight fire that gutted a pensioner’s house on November 18 on the corner of 12th Avenue and Alfred Nzo Street still remains a mystery.

Olga Matlhodi Mabusela (65) told Alex News in a telephonic interview that three weeks since the fire she was still waiting for answers from authorities on the origins of the fire.

“I am still waiting for information on what could have sparked the fire. I am still in the dark as to the possible cause. No one has come back to me to report the findings or let alone explain the way forward on the rebuilding of the house,” Mabusela said.

“I am a pensioner with no income and resources to plough into the rebuilding of the house. I don’t know where to go and whom to talk to and my only hope now lies in some good Samaritans to spring to my rescue.”
City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson Nana Radebe said the normal procedure would be that a fire investigator would have done his or her investigation and informed the victim.

“Sometimes we work closely with the members of the SAPS [South Africa Police Service] who then conduct the investigation into the cause of the fire and report back to the victim,” Radebe said.

Mabusela confirmed that an officer of Alex SAPS had conducted an investigation on the day of the incident including asking her a few questions to establish pointers to the potential cause of the fire.

“Since the officer left the scene on the day of the fire, I have not heard from him up until now.”
