Alex Wolves Rugby Club receive a lifeline

ALEXANDRA – Mpengu says the efforts and support of AST Recycling towards Alex Wolves Rugby Club do not go unnoticed.

Cash-strapped amateur rugby club Alex Wolves has received a lifeline from Kew-based company AST Recycling which helps with the transportation of players to and from their games.

This was disclosed by Alex Wolves Rugby Club founder and president Elias Mpengu during an interview with Alex News at KwaBhekilanga Sports Ground in Far East Bank.

Mpengu said the club had been struggling to meet its fixture commitments for a long time since its formation in 2005 due to a lack of financial support. “I have been taking from my pocket to finance the teams… but those pockets are not deep enough.

“I have received support from the Gauteng Department of Sport before but running a club whose games are far and wide within the province involves enormous costs for travel and other costs associated pertaining to [playing] the fixtures,” Mpengu said.

Mpengu conveyed his gratitude to AST Recycling for their support to ensure the club could meet its fixture commitments and for going beyond to ensure the players have something to eat on those trips and were fully kitted as well.

“They did not stop just there. AST also offered our players and their family food relief during the Covid-19 hard lockdown. All this is greatly appreciated and does not go unnoticed,” Mpengu said.
