Alex musician rises from the ashes

ALEXANDRA – The local musician says his mission with his music is to change people's mindset and heal broken hearts.

An Alex musician has decided to make music to heal broken hearts and inspire others to shy away from suicide or drugs.

The musician is on the verge of breaking the internet with his live content on a recent visit to KwaMadala Hostel while also making waves with his song that speaks about his troubled upbringing as an orphan.

Jabulani Zondi, whose stage name is Jabz Menyonyo, is doing all this in a backyard studio known as Turbang Studios in Tsutsumani owned by his high school friend, Thabang Madisha.

Jabz, as he is popularly known, lost his mother when he was still a toddler. She died in 1991 soon after giving birth to her third son, Sipho Mazibuko. Jabz and Sipho are separated by only two years. Their father died in 2001 and left them in the care of their ‘brother from another mother’, Mthokozisi Mazibuko.

From the loss of both parents at an early age to adopting a stranger’s surname, Jabz shares these stories with his audience through his music. His song Inhlungu zeGolide, featuring Zino-buu, loosely translates to ‘my golden troubles of growing up’.

Jabz has shared the stage with the likes of DJ Maphorisa, KabzaDeSmall and Somizi. He is an accomplished MC and DJ, and aims to change his troubled childhood upbringing by turning it into a gold mine from which he now harvests the proceeds of a better life for himself.

“I would like to teach and, at the same time, inspire others who might have had a similar upbringing as mine to say they too can turn their bad situations into a mine of gold that provides for their upkeep,” Jabz said.

“I want to ensure that those going through what I experienced become strong and use that episode to better their lives and not become suicidal or turn to nyaope. This is what I want to do, change their mindset and heal the broken hearts.”
