KFC adds Rays of Hope for Alex children

ALEXANDRA – Fighting child hunger crisis in SA requires collaboration from the public and private sectors as well as civil society, says KFC's Andra Nel.

World Food Day will be observed on October 16, and KFC South Africa has committed itself to work closely with Alexandra’s Rays of Hope in its unrelenting fight against child hunger in the township.

After 12 years of running the Add Hope programme, KFC still is and has committed itself to playing an even bigger role in the eradication of the hunger crisis affecting children, and has invited all and sundry in the country to ‘let hope, not doubt, shape the future of children’.

World Food Day seeks to create awareness about the plight of poverty, hunger and food insecurity, including an end to global hunger which is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that are intended to be achieved by 2030.

The joint South African National Income Dynamics Study and the Coronavirus Rapid Mobile Survey, shows that child hunger has remained high with one-in-seven households reporting that a child went hungry in April this year.

This crisis has been worsened by the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic which has resulted in significant job losses and increased food prices.

KFC corporate social investment manager, Andra Nel said they have roped in Rays of Hope to fight hunger among the community of Alexandra where she said the non-profit company had excelled in the past three decades of service to this community.

“Fighting the child hunger crisis in SA requires collaboration from the public and private sectors as well as civil society. It is for this reason that we have roped in Rays of Hope as partners in this fight to combat food insecurity in the country,” Nel told Alex News.

In Gauteng, Nel said money raised from the Add Hope for R2 campaign goes to SOS Children’s Villages, Hope worldwide South Africa, Joburg Child Welfare, Nigel Caring Community, Rays of Hope in Alexandra, Bona Lesedi Women and Child Care, The Love Trust, Hillbrow Home of Hope, Pretoria Sunrise Rotary Club, and Giyani Primary School just to name but a few of the more than 140 beneficiaries.

In August, KFC Add Hope mobilised its partner organisations to donate more than two million food parcels. KFC Add Hope responded to the chronic food shortages in the hardest-hit areas of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng during the recent riots, Alexandra included.
