Alexandrians wait for last day to register to vote

ALEXANDRA – We had a flood of people coming to register on the last day, said 12th Avenue Church presiding officer.

Alexandrians waited for the last day of the voter registration weekend of September 18 and 19 to check their details or register to vote in the coming municipal elections.

This was confirmed by the presiding officer at the 12th Avenue Church registration station in Ward 108 which also happens to be a heritage site. The officer asked that her name not be used citing what she said was a requirement of the Independent Electoral Commission.

“We had a flood of people on the last day, more than double the number we processed the previous day, signalling a tendency of people to wait until the last day to do things. It has become a culture for our people to wait for the last day,” the officer said.

She echoed incidents of low turnout on the first day as raised by many of her colleagues at the other stations. “I am happy to say day two picked up very well and we saw the arrival of some of the Ama-2000 generational youth,” the officer added.

Babalwa Tshothwa, presiding officer for Ward 107 at the Realogile High School voter registration station, said her station never experienced a slow day over the two days.
