Alex juniors’ league hangs in the balance

ALEXANDRA – Clubs in the township will have to ratify their preferred option from the proposal, says local football association's Malvin Khumalo.

The future of the disrupted 2021 local junior soccer league hangs in balance for Alex children.

The 2020 season was cancelled following the outbreak of the Covid-19 global pandemic and subsequent lockdown on March 26 last year, just before that year’s league could kick off. The disruption of the leagues has spilled into this year as the 2021 league has not kicked off as yet, with only two months of playing time left before the schools close in early December.

The secretary-general of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association Malvin Khumalo said he was in process of drafting a proposal document on the future of the 2021 league which he hopes to present to clubs in the area at a meeting soon.

The document contains three proposals. The first is to start a fresh league in 2022; the second option is to start the 2021 league late to overlap into next year.

The third option is to downsize the league and group the teams into four groups of a mini-knockout cup league format. The groups would play a round-robin, with two winners from each group progressing into the quarter-finals, semi-finals and, ultimately, the final.

The clubs will have to ratify which option they will prefer from the proposed offer of three, Khumalo concluded.
