City poets to descend on Alex for tongue twisters
ALEXANDRA – Artists have been silent for far too long and the time is now ripe for its voice to be heard once again, says Molepo.
Alexandra Arts Academy will host a poetry session at its premises at Sankopano Centre on September 24.
The session, which forms part of the annual Arts Alive International Festival of the City of Johannesburg, will see more than 20 poets recite their poems.
The Arts Alive Festival began on September 7 and will run until December 12 with various virtual activities and events to mark Heritage Month in September.
Mpho Molepo of the academy said Alex’s own nationally acclaimed poet and arts creative, Refilwe Pieterse would headline the event which would comprise well-established poets and those who were still trying to find their feet in this arts industry space.
“We feel the arts industry has been silent for far too long and the time was now ripe for its voice to be heard once again.
“I think we need to take advantage of technology and develop creative ways of ensuring the voice of the artists never dies but that it rises once again,” Molepo said at the launch of festival at Joburg Theatre.
Molepo currently runs acting masterclasses for 150 Alex children every Saturday at the academy. The academy was where he grew his arts creative talent and he now works there to unearth and develop new and aspiring creatives.
