Alex learners urged to pen anti-racism essay and win big prizes

ALEXANDRA – The first place essay stands to receive R2 000, the second R1 000 and the third R500.

Learners at Alexandra schools are asked to pen down their thoughts in an essay around the hot topic of racism and stand a chance to win monetary rewards.

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s Youth Essay Writing Competition, launched on the 92nd birth anniversary of the late freedom fighter and ANC stalwart, calls for essay submissions from the youth aged between 15 and 21 years to help spread awareness against racism.

Suggested topics for the essay, which should be between 1 000 to 1 400 words, are as follows:

  • A future without racism is possible
  • Schools should be laboratories of anti-racism
  • Apartheid is over, racism is over. Or is it?

The first place essay stands to receive R2 000, the second R1 000 and the third to receive R500. All of the participants will also receive certificates upon submission of their essays which must be original work and can be written in any South African language.

Essays must indicate the following details: your name and surname, email address if you have one, your best contact number as well as your physical address. The entries should be submitted on or before October 29, 2021 either by email to youth@kathradafoundation.org or by post to P.O. Box 3240 Lenasia 1820.
