City council set to elect new mayor

JOBURG – This follows the passing of late executive mayor Geoff Makhubo on July 19.

The City of Johannesburg is set to hold an extra-ordinary council meeting on August 10 to elect a new executive mayor.

This follows the passing of late executive mayor Geoff Makhubo on July 19.

“The Speaker of Council Nonceba Molwele, has called the extra-ordinary meeting in terms of Rule 16 of the Standing Rules and Orders of Council.

“The process to elect the executive mayor will be in accordance with Schedule 3 of the Municipal Structures Act,” said spokesperson for the speaker, Sipho Masigo.

The meeting will be held in the new council chamber while different venues will also be used to accommodate councillors, in line with social distancing practices.
