Alex FM to broadcast from Alex Mall

ALEXANDRA – Station manager Takalane Nemangowe welcomes the donation towards the rebuilding of Alex FM.

The long road towards the rebuilding of the vandalised and looted Alex FM community radio station has begun in earnest.

The rebuilding has been kick-started by donations from various non-governmental organisations, one of which is Rays of Hope that has been involved in extensive community-building work in the township for the past 30 years.

Rays of Hope donated R11 000 to the Alex FM fundraising kitty which it hoped would be matched if not surpassed by other donor organisations in this noble effort to rebuild the station which had been a voice of the community of Alexandra for the past 27 years.

Speaking just before the handover of the cheque, Rays of Hope CEO Sihle Mooi described the station as an ‘excellent and trusted voice of the community for over 27 years and whose remarkable work cannot be allowed to be permanently silenced by a few rogue individuals in the community’.

“We have worked closely with Alex FM and the community of Alexandra and as Rays of Hope we feel we can’t sit idle and fold our hands when one of us is undergoing trying times. We have therefore decided to lend a hand and throw something into the kitty towards the rebuilding of this station.

“This donation is not the last from us and I can assure you will hear from us again,” added Mooi.
Rays of Hope programme specialist Trish Lockwood and finance and human resources manager Sandy Chapman both indicated their organisation would do all in its power to ensure Alex FM was rebuilt.

Accepting the donation, radio station manager Takalane Nemangowe said the donation was highly appreciated as it would go a long way towards the rebuilding of a looted community asset.

“I am here to accept this gesture from a long-standing friend of the station and to also express the appreciation of the board, staff and the community of Alex.”

Nemangowe told Alex News the station was grateful to LM Radio for offering it a temporary home away from home. He announced the station will soon be moving back to the community to broadcast from Alex Mall until the refurbishment of its headquarters at the Yarona Building on the Pan Africa Square was completed.
