Alex youth urged to form cooperatives to beat unemployment

ALEXANDRA – The programme intended to address the persistently high youth unemployment rate.

A Youth Cooperatives Development Programme in Region E was launched on 17 June by the Gauteng Department of Economic Development to raise awareness among young people about cooperatives and also to create jobs.

The launch took place at Sankopano Centre and according to Lumka Dlomo, the marketing manager at Johannesburg Tourism Company and programme director for the day, the programme was aimed at disseminating information about cooperatives to the youth of the township.

“We chose the perfect month [Youth Month] to inform the youth about cooperatives as an alternative form of enterprise models which young people can use for their economic, social and cultural development as well as the attainment of their aspirations,” Dlomo said.

She encouraged the youth, who form the bulk of the unemployed people in this country, to start forming cooperatives and collaborate with the department.

“We are not trying to take over your cooperatives but are merely hoping to work closely with you in promoting them because we know this initiative is bound to create the much-needed job opportunities.”

Peter Mukwevho of Lesedi Primary Co-operative said starting a cooperative was one of the hardest things he had ever done. “Starting such a huge venture without funds poses a big headache as you struggle to source the materials to start,” Mukwevho added.
