‘Staycations’

If you would rather take your break indoors and avoid spending money and time leaving town for a holiday then a 'staycation' is what you need.

Since there is no packing and travelling, a ‘staycation’ avoids many frustrations but the challenge is finding activities to do at home. Here are a few ideas.

1. Organise a neighbourhood braai social

Encourage your neighbours to take part in the organising of the event, if there are any who can play instruments encourage them to bring them and showcase their talent at the event. The braai will give you an opportunity to mingle with your neighbours.

2. Volunteer at a local retirement village, children’s home or animal shelter

Read an elderly person a book, tell children stories, paint the walls, help clear the garden. The experience will help you appreciate what you have. Take the kids along so they can learn a thing or two and use this experience to bring the family closer.

3. Decorate your house

If your dream holiday is to visit iconic places or landscapes, decorate your home using the destination of your dreams as the theme. Encourage the entire family to participate in the selection and decorating of the house.

4. Tour your city

There are definitely places in and around the city that you have not seen, use this festive season to see the places you have never seen before: there is less traffic which means less time travelling to your destination. Bring the kids along!

5. Set up a tent in your backyard and have a camp

Pitch a tent in your garden area and spend a night or two living in it, draw up some rules that prohibit anyone from entering the house for that period and make sure you have enough supplies.
