Red hot Zingawe continues to make waves

ALEXANDRA - Top striker propels club to elite women's football league.

Red hot Zingawe Phakathi’s striking prowess has propelled United Ladies to the premier league of women’s football in South Africa.

Zingawe was at her best when the team conquered all that was before it during the regional play-offs for promotion to the Sasol Women’s Football League.

She scored seven of the 13 goals that saw her team become runaway winners of the promotional race for the elite league.

Zingawe, a Realogile High School pupil, was the leading goal scorer of the play-offs, which the Alex girls won after only conceding a solitary goal against Early Bird Ladies from West Rand.

Commenting on her scintillating performance, the shy and soft-spoken Grade 11 pupil attributed all her feats at the play-offs to team work. “I did all what I did on the day because of my team-mates, without whom I would not have been able to become a top goal scorer on the day,” she said.

“I feel great about the fact that my performance and that of my team-mates propelled the team to the elite Sasol League,” she said. Asked whether she will still be playing for them in the new league Zingawe replied, “All the way.”

She admitted to having been approached by Moroka Swallows. “I declined the gesture as I am still committed to United Ladies,” she said.

Zingawe, who was not selected for the victorious U20 national squad in its recent sojourn to Tanzania, is expected to be called-up when the two countries clash again here at home in the second leg.
