DStv is the new sponsor of the former Absa Premiership

The Premier Soccer League has secured a new sponsor for its premiership football.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has finally found a new headline sponsor for its premier division following the departure of Absa at the conclusion of the just ended Absa Premiership season.

The new sponsor is MultiChoice’s DStv brand, which has signed a five-year deal to become the new title sponsor of what will be known as the DStv Premiership.
“This is a continuation of a vibrant and fruitful partnership between the PSL and MultiChoice,” said league chairperson Dr Irvin ‘Iron Duke’ Khoza when he announced the partnership during a virtual press conference from the studios of MultiChoice.

MultiChoice is also a sponsor of the PSL’s reserve league known as MultiChoice Diski Challenge, besides being the broadcast partner of all the matches of the league. This league caters for fringe players of premiership clubs who often become benchwarmers as they do not get enough game time and subsequently fall by the wayside.
The PSL has transformed into a top 10 league globally after the 2007 broadcast rights’ deal, growing the best local players and attracting stars from the continent and beyond African shores.

Added to this has been the MultiChoice Diski Challenge reserve league, from which players such as Percy Tau and Lyle Foster have gone on to excel internationally, Khoza added.

The Iron Duke said the DStv Premiership marked an elevation of South Africa’s PSL, bringing together the best of sport and entertainment under one roof. “The establishment of the DStv Premiership is a natural evolution to the relationship and will be a powerful synergy, in what it brings for the football supporters.

“As the PSL continues to innovate with a quest to improve its product, it will have the full backing of DStv, whose offering requires an abundance of local content. There is no ‘them and us’, we are joined at the hip to produce enhanced consumption of the best product for our deserving supporters.”

Speaking at the same press conference, MultiChoice Group CEO, Calvo Mawela believes the deal between DStv and the Premier Soccer League speaks to the essence of who and what the two organisations represent.
“The DStv Premiership is the coming together of two brands that connect South Africans emotionally,” said Mawela. “Whether you are watching the best of local football or the best local entertainment, the passion for both is unmatched.”

As part of this new chapter in South African football, the DStv Premiership strives to reach every community in South Africa, both existing PSL loyalists and emerging new groups.
Mawela described their new slogan, Babize Bonke as their rallying call to all South Africans to come together in the experience of a common passion.
